What is a Fantasy Assist?

Fantasy Assist markets settle on a collection of assist events that fall outside the conventional categorisation of a Goal Assist. A Fantasy Assist is awarded to the player on the scoring team who provides the final qualifying touch prior to a goal being scored, categorised into the following types:

  • Pass Lost: A Fantasy Assist is awarded when a pass or cross reaches the goalscorer following a single defensive touch that does not constitute a pass. If the ball is received outside the penalty area, the recipient must have been the intended target of the original pass. If the ball is received inside the penalty area by any attacking player, intention to reach a specified target is not required.
  • Handball: A Fantasy Assist is awarded when an attacking action or touch directly leads to a handball by a defending player, and the resulting penalty or free kick is scored. If a defensive action deemed insignificant (e.g. a deflection of a shot that remains goal-bound) precedes the handball, the Fantasy Assist is still awarded to the attacking player responsible for the initial action.
  • Blocked Shot / Miss: A Fantasy Assist is awarded when a blocked shot or a shot off target (where there is a defensive touch and the ball remains in play) results directly in a goal being scored.
  • Attempt Saved: A Fantasy Assist is awarded when a shot saved by the goalkeeper is immediately followed by a goal being scored from the resulting play.
  • Post: A Fantasy Assist is awarded when a shot strikes the woodwork and the immediate next action results in a goal being scored.
  • Free Kick Won: A Fantasy Assist is awarded to the player who draws the foul resulting in a free kick from which a goal is scored directly by another player.
  • Own Goal: A Fantasy Assist is awarded to the attacking player whose final attacking touch forces an own goal.

A Fantasy Assist is only awarded where the goal is scored by a different player to the one whose qualifying action gives rise to the Fantasy Assist. Where the same player both performs the qualifying action and scores the resulting goal, no Fantasy Assist is awarded.
